How to buy fireworks legally and safely this Halloween: fireworks industry

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – We are just days away from the spookiest night of the year and along with tricks and treats, fireworks are an annual part of the fun for many people on the Lower Mainland.

But the Canadian National Fireworks Association wants to make sure you’re doing so legally and safely.

First, know the bylaws in your municipality. In Vancouver for instance, you have to have a permit and can purchase fireworks in the week leading up to Halloween, but only set them off on the 31st on private property.

Melanie Sutherland with the association says people should make sure they’re buying from a reputable vendor.

“You should not be able to access individual fireworks on their own until after you’ve purchased them, and the vendor should always be asking you for your permit at the time of sale,” she adds.

Another way to check if you are buying from a reputable vendor is to check the labels, Sutherland says.

“An easy way to tell about a product is not authorized for use in Canada is if the label is not in both English and French.”
