New area code coming to B.C. in May

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The number of phone numbers across British Columbia continues to grow — and, apparently, the province needs a new area code to accommodate all of them.
Starting in May, don’t be surprised if someone gives you their phone number and it starts with 672.
“The new area code will be introduced gradually across the province starting on May 4, 2019,” Edward Antecol, General Manager of the Canadian Numbering Administrator, said in a release.
“After this date, consumers and businesses requesting a new phone number may receive one with the new area code.”
The major telecommunications service providers in the country say the area code will be only be assigned once there is no longer a decent supply of numbers with the older area codes, which include 604, 778, 250, and 236.
