British Columbians relate more to Washington, California than Alberta: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – When it comes to identifying as a “western” province, B.C. appears to be dancing to its own beat.

That’s according to a new poll from Angus Reid. Executive Director Sachi Kurl says we seem to have more in common with our neighbours to the south.

“It is a province that looks to the south, to the idea of Cascadia — having more in common with Washington state, with California — indeed, with the pacific, given our very diverse population in B.C.”

She says relationships with provinces like Alberta have weakened over time.

“Three decades ago, British Columbians felt that they had more in common with Alberta,” Kurl said. “Certainly, Albertans felt that they had far more in common with British Columbia than they do today.

Kurl tells us the shift is due to some major differences in values. “We’ve seen that manifested through the pipeline debate and through other issues. And our sense of commonality is not there, either.”

What they do have in common? According to the poll, people in western provinces believe they’re unfairly treated by the federal government, when it comes to political influence.
