Pattullo Bridge replacement given environmental assessment certificate

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Plans to replace the aging Pattullo Bridge between New Westminster and Surrey has cleared another legal hurdle.

B.C.’s ministers of environment and municipal affairs have granted the project an environmental assessment certificate.

In their decision, the ministers said they were confident the construction, demolition and operational activities wouldn’t cause significant to the environment.

“In addition to the 20 conditions that are part of the project’s environmental assessment certificate, design requirements are specified in the certified project description, which are legally binding requirements that the ministry must meet to maintain compliance with the certificate,” reads a release from the ministry.

“The ministry is also required to obtain other federal, provincial and local government permits or approvals, including a project and environmental review permit from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, in order to proceed with construction of the project,” reads the release.

Some of the key conditions include having plans in place to monitor wildlife habitats, to include input from Indigenous groups, as well as have in place a cultural and archaeological resources management plan.

The ministry is proposing a four-lane bridge to replace the existing one.
