Explosion and fire at scrap metal facility in Squamish

SQUAMISH (NEWS 1130) — There’s been a fire and explosion at a scrap metal facility in Squamish.

No one is believed to have been injured, but that hasn’t been confirmed. It seems the fire happened at ASM Squamish Scrap Metal after a propane tank exploded around 4 p.m.

District of Squamish Councillor John French works a few blocks away from where it happened. He says he saw thick, gray smoke climbing up into the air.

“Then it just got darker and darker, blacker and blacker, and the smell of rubber started to really increase as the smoke got thicker and blacker,” he says.

According to the District of Squamish, the fire is believed to be under control.

“Squamish Fire Rescue has reported the fire is now in the knock down stage and there is no visible smoke in the area,” reads a release from the District.
