Wildfire Service assessing conditions as temperatures rise across B.C.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As temperatures rise across B.C., the Wildfire Service will be reassessing conditions.

Erika Berg with the BC Wildfire Service says fires could spark in dry areas and is reminding British Columbians to be extremely careful while out enjoying the weather.

“If there is no fire ban in place, when enjoying a campfire make sure that you have a source nearby to extinguish it. We don’t want to restrict the public from the outdoors but it’s just a matter of keeping everybody safe,” she says. “If a fire ban or prohibition is necessary we’ll put those in place in some areas with fuels that are at risk.”

Berg adds crews are well prepared for the hot weather ahead.

“So looking ahead, we’re looking at yes, there being an increase in temperatures. We’re expecting a bit of a drying trend in the south, so we just want to remain sufficiently staffed and everybody’s ready in case we are to get a lightening event or sparks to occur.”

There are currently 23 fires burning right now – two of them sparked this weekend.
