Man arrested after ‘threat’ prompted evacuation of Surrey mall

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The RCMP says a man has been arrested in relation to a threat that prompted the evacuation of Surrey Central City Mall on Sunday afternoon.

It happened at 4 p.m. on Aug. 25, when shoppers were told over the PA to leave the mall for an “undisclosed security reason.” The Surrey RCMP assisted with the evacuation, which extended to surrounding businesses.

The RCMP says it was looking into a “threat.” With the help of police dogs, it says in a release that investigators determined the area was safe and arrested a suspect shortly after at a residence nearby.

The mall, across the street from Surrey Central SkyTrain station, reopened and shoppers were allowed back in.

Police have not released the name of the suspect, or specified the nature of the threat.
