SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Dozens of people from the “Keep the RCMP in Surrey” group filed into Surrey City Hall Monday night as council met, holding up images of murdered minor hockey coach Paul Bennett.
He was shot and killed in his driveway in June of 2018 in broad daylight in what the Surrey RCMP later confirmed was a case of mistaken identity.
Among the group was Darlene Bennett, Paul’s widow.

Bennett points the blame at Mayor Doug McCallum for dissolving the public safety committee and planning to scrap the Surrey RCMP
“I don’t think our mayor has done anything to address public safety as of yet because the violence is still happening and there is nothing being done,” she said. “He has been in office for almost a year, and he has done nothing. He hasn’t added one single police officer and that makes me very angry.”
She wants the safety committee to be back up and running, and has even reached out to the mayor regarding the issue. McCallum has yet to respond.
“I don’t think he’s being truthful or transparent about what we are actually gaining — that’s all I want is the truth. I’m raising two boys. I want them to live in a better Surrey,” the widow said, adding she wants to see additional supports to address gun violence.
There have been no arrests in Paul Bennett’s murder.
