WHISTLER (NEWS 1130) — A man has died after police used pepper spray, batons and a taser when trying to arrest him in Whistler Sunday morning.

Police were called to the Whistler Village around 11 a.m. to respond to an “intoxicated male who was causing a disturbance,” according a statement from Whistler RCMP.

Officers used pepper spray, a taser, and their batons to try to subdue him.

“The male suddenly became still, and officers began CPR and called emergency health services. He was transported to hospital but was pronounced deceased,” reads a release.

Three officers were injured but have been released from hospital.

The Independent Investigations Office has been called in to investigate whether police action or inaction is linked to the man’s death.

Anyone who was a witness is being asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
