VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The 34th Canucks for Kids Fund telethon returns to Rogers Arena on Monday as the Vancouver NHL team takes on the New York Islanders.
Since its inception, the telethon has raised more than $64 million for children’s charities across B.C., including the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and BC Children’s Hospital.
“Their phrase of, ‘We are all Canucks,’ this is when this city, this province really steps up and helps out an organization that, yes, we’re celebrating your 50th anniversary and, yes, they’ve never won a Stanley Cup, but they really have been champions in the community,” said Perry Solkowski, with Sportsnet 650 and who’s hosting tonight’s festivities.
“Yes, when the Vancouver Canucks are playing good hockey it does help,” he added. “The mood that people are in and they’re in a more giving mood. We’ve never really left disappointed.”
This is Solkowski’s third year involved with the telethon and enjoys the anticipation that builds towards the end of the game, when he gets to announce the final total raised and say, “‘Wow, we had another wonderful night.'”
He also said watching the stories of parents and their children is emotional.
“I’m always so impressed and surprised at the courage these families have to tell their story and how they’ve been affected by it. You will see people stepping up, including one of the Vancouver Canucks in Tyler Motte, who came out his story on mental health and how he has struggled.”
Tonight’s TV broadcast on Sportsnet starts at 6:45 p.m.
