Forecast calls for heavy snow along Coquihalla

MERRIT (NEWS 1130) – Take it easy if you’re off to the Interior on Tuesday.

Snow is in the forecast for the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt, with some sections expected to get a lot of it.

“It is the same moisture-laden jet stream bringing five to 15 millimetres of rainfall to the Lower Mainland today, that will move over higher terrain inland and encounter much colder air,” NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says. “A sagging freezing level across the B.C. Southern Interior sets the stage for minor accumulations of wet snow today, on the order of one to four centimetres across the Okanagan, however the higher mountains passes such as the Coquihalla are going to get walloped: 15 to 25 cm of snowfall expected between now and sunrise Wednesday morning.”

Drivers are being reminded to slow down, prepare for quickly changing travel conditions, and to ensure they have the proper tires on their vehicles before heading out.

The heavy snow is expected to impact visibility so motorists are also reminded to keep a safe distance between themselves and the vehicles around them.

Spring officially begins next week.
