46 new COVID-19 cases in B.C., no deaths in August

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — The province announced 46 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, but again no new deaths and none so far in August.

The outbreak at Krazy Cherry Fruit in Oliver has also been declared over.

Outbreaks remain active at seven long-term care or assisted living facilities and one acute care ward, according to a statement from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

They added public health is using contact tracing to mitigate growth in cases.

“As we look to fall, what we’ve learned from other jurisdictions is that transmission in a school setting is a reflection of what’s happening in our communities; keeping our community transmission low and slow keeps us all safe,” they say.

Education Minister Rob Fleming confirmed Tuesday that students will not return to in-class learning on Sept. 8, as previously announced.

Henry and Dix encouraged B.C. residents to support contact tracing by keeping gatherings small. They also recommend having a designated “contact keeper,” and to limit time with others, maintain physical distance, and always stay home if feeling unwell.

“The number of people we see self-isolating from the past few days reflects the work that public-health teams are doing tracing people around the province to prevent the spread and stop outbreaks,” they add.

“Every case is followed up and linked.”

Earlier in the day, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority warned about a COVID-19 exposure at the Foot Locker on Robson Street in Vancouver.

With the new cases, the total in B.C. rises to 4,111.

Active cases in B.C. are now up 472. Of those, eight people are in hospital, including five in intensive care.

Deaths remain at 195, while the recovery rate dipped a bit to around 84 per cent.

The last death related to COVID-19 in B.C. was recorded on July 31.

Cases by health region since the start of the pandemic: 1,232 in Vancouver Coastal; 2,167 in Fraser; 148 in Island; 393 in Interior; 100 in Northern; and 71 involving people who reside outside of Canada.
