VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Three local longshore workers have tested positive for COVID-19.
It’s unclear what facilities are affected, but International Longshore & Warehouse Union Local 502 posted notices online, saying the workers who tested positive from Local 500 had done some work in its jurisdiction before they showed symptoms.
“With members travelling from ‘depressed ports’ and the foremen’s Local 514 working at multiple sites, this could spread like wildfire amongst the ranks of our ILWU families,” reads the post on 502’s website.
The members from Local 500 are currently in self-isolation.
The post also says these are the first confirmed cases involving its members.
Once a case is confirmed, local unions say they will provide details for each positive worker dating back two weeks, which includes dates, terminals, vessels, jobs and the shifts worked. All longshoremen are told they must check the postings.
As per public health regulations, anyone who came into contact with someone who has COVID-19 should self-isolate for 14 days.
Members of that union have called NEWS 1130 this week with concerns about how the situation is being handled.
