SURREY (NEWS 1130) — A man was killed in a shooting at a shopping complex in the Fleetwood area of Surrey Sunday night.
It happened at around 7:40 p.m. in front of the Shoppers Drug Mart at Fraser Highway and 152nd Street.
Riyad Rasheed, a man police say was known to them, was found by Surrey RCMP and paramedics in critical condition. Despite their efforts, the man died from his injuries.
In a statement, Surrey RCMP Staff Sergeant Joe Johal said, “While this shooting caused a risk to public safety as it unfolded, there is no indication of any on-going risk in the area.”
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has now taken over the investigation. The victim was known to police and they believe this was a targeted hit.
Shannon Stewart, a HandyDART driver, says she heard multiple shots fired when she was waiting for a client at a nearby grocery store.
“All you heard was like, ‘bang, bang, bang, bang.’ Crazy. I looked at the fireman and I said, ‘Was that firecrackers or shots fired?’ He said, ‘That’s shots fired, get in your bus and get the hell out of here.’ That’s exactly what he said to me.”
At this point, no one has been arrested but police are asking for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam or surveillance video to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
“This was a brazen shooting in a commercial plaza with numerous members of the public in the area at the time of the incident,” IHIT’s Sgt. Frank Jang says. “The perpetrators of this violence need to be held to account. They will now be targeted for prosecution.”
