SURREY (NEWS 1130) — A massive development for Surrey is set to undergo its final public hearing Monday, with the GEC Education Mega Center poised to become a major Surrey landmark.
City council will deliberate the center and if there aren’t any major stumbles, the 49-storey building is expected to be finished by 2024.
Toby Chu, CEO of CIBT Education Group, says the new building is going to be home to the Sprott Shaw College Surrey Campus, but will also have space for other education companies.
“The building will comprise of student living, faculties, and families, and working professionals,” he says. “Right across the street is going to be the new Surrey City business development corp.”
The vast majority of the 542-foot building will be for dorm rooms and rental space, with close to a thousand people living in the building once the project is finished.
Chu also notes the close proximity to SFU and Kwantlen campuses.
Once completed, the center will be the fourth tallest building in Metro Vancouver.
Construction for the $275-million project is set to start this summer.
