Noisy late-night SkyTrain work coming to East Vancouver, TransLink warns

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Some East Vancouver residents might want to invest in earplugs, as TransLink says work on the Expo Line SkyTrain route will make some late-night noise for the next several months.

The transit authority sent a letter this week to people living near the tracks, saying it will replace 6,700 metres of track and 14,100 rail pads between the Commercial-Broadway and Main Street-Science World stations starting this month through next winter.

“As crews gradually work along the line, neighbours can expect nighttime noise for periods of up to two weeks at a time. This will involve intermittent cutting and grinding of steel, diesel-powered work trains, and the hoisting and placement of steel, including impact noise,” the letter warns.

The work will take place between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, TransLink says.

“This has been an ongoing project under the TransLink Maintenance and Repair Program since 2018,” TransLink spokesperson Jill Drews said in an email. “Rather than making spot-fixes as we have in the past, we’re taking a proactive approach to replace rail and rail pads along specific segments of track all at once.”

There will be “modified service” between several stations during the project, with service updates posted to the TransLink website.

“We will work with our contractor to minimize the impact on neighbours and we also thank our neighbours for their patience,” Drews said.

Updates on the project can be found at TransLink.ca/keepmoving.
