Vancouver Park Board tightens restrictions on Strathcona Park homeless encampment

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — With an end-of-April deadline looming to move all the campers out of Strathcona Park, their living space is being tightened even further.
The Park Board says people living in the northeast section of the Park will have to clear the area by Thursday of next week by 10 a.m.
This follows a previous order in mid-February which limited everyone living in Strathcona to the east side of the Park.
The City says the move is needed as the remediation of the west side of the Park is wrapping up.
“The aim is to resume normal park operations, including recreational activities and other community programs, as quickly as possible once the people living in the park have been transitioned into indoor spaces and the encampment has been closed,” a statement from the Park Board reads.
It also says the City is still actively looking for more permanent housing for those in Strathcona.
“In the coming weeks, new locations across Vancouver will be activated to support people who are experiencing homelessness, including two new shelters at 875 Terminal and 15-27 West Hastings,” the statement continues.
“Once people have moved from the northeast corner into accommodation, staff from the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will erect a fence barrier to temporarily close off the area for remediation. The work is expected to take approximately three to six weeks to complete.”
