CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) — A family in Chilliwack is looking for a unique pet, they hope will help teach their daughter that being different is something to be celebrated.
Vanessa McLeod says her 2-year-old daughter, Ivy, was born without forearms or hands, which is more commonly known as a limb difference.
But, she says Ivy is a perfectly happy, healthy little girl.
“There’s no known reason, there was no underlying cause, it was just something that randomly happened, but we happen to think she’s perfect,” says Vanessa. “She is so fiercely determined and independent, and she’s always learning new things and doing things on her own, like, she refuses help a lot of the time. Especially when it’s things like, getting onto a chair or walking up the stairs… She’s very determined to do anything that she wants.”
But, she believes that Ivy may have more questions as she gets older, and she believes a puppy with a limb difference would be the perfect companion.
“Just for her to know that it’s okay when things like this happen, and it’s okay to be different, it’s a beautiful thing to be different, and it’s something that we will always celebrate in our family,” she says. “I mean, I don’t think there’s any such thing as normal, I think we’re all different in our own ways, it’s just how you view it and seeing the beauty in our differences and diversity.”
She believes their bond would be incredibly special.
“I also know that a lot of people might view a puppy like that as imperfect or flawed, but in our house we would totally see that puppy as perfect, and deserving of life and deserving of a home full of love.”
She says they’re open to all kinds of dogs, but they prefer a small-to-medium-sized breed that would be good with children.
