RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Richmond RCMP is investigating a mysterious substance linked to a number of sick and dead squirrels found in Richmond’s South Arm Park last week.
Mounties were called out to the park, near Williams Road, last Wednesday after a neighbour found a number of sick and dead squirrels in the area.
City staff and fire crews then scoured the park and cordoned-off all possibly-affected areas in the interest of public safety.
Richmond Fire Department has since identified the substance as 1-Octanethiol — a compound used to make other chemicals, which can be dangerous to people and animals if not handled correctly.
The RCMP is investigating how or why the toxin got into the park in the first place, however they are warning the public, especially pet owners, to be aware and to keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
Richmond RCMP is asking if anyone has any information regarding the incident to call them at 604-278-1212.
