Heat hacks: How do you cool down when the temperature rises?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The next few days are going to be scorchers across the Lower Mainland, with a warning of a dangerous heatwave. You may be wondering if there are any hacks to beat the heat you don’t yet know about.

We went around the NEWS 1130 newsroom, asking for a bit of advice. Morning digital editor Hana Mae Nassar says it’s all about finding a comfortable spot.

“It’s usually on the floor,” she said, adding she often has several fans facing her direction at a time.

Hana Mae is also known to just hang out in a dry bathtub to cool down.

“The bathroom is the coolest place in your house, especially if you don’t have windows! Why not?”

NEWS 1130 morning digital editor Hana Mae Nassar can sometimes be found seeking some relief from the heat in her bathtub. (For the record, this picture was not in this sweltering heat)

Lasia Kretzel, our social media producer, has a rather counter-intuitive suggestion:

“Drink some hot tea! When you drink the hot tea, you sweat a little, and all that sweat’s going to evaporate and you’re going to cool down.”

But she warns this only works if you’re wearing a short-sleeved shirt and shorts.

“A long-sleeved shirt’s not going to evaporate the sweat, so you’re not going to get cool!” she said.

“Have a shower that’s not too hot. Just medium, kind of cool,” advised Ryan Lidemark in the NEWS 1130 Traffic Centre.

Denise Wong, our managing editor for digital, says her heat hack is simple: have kids.

“If you go to a spray park and you’re chasing around little kids, you kind of have to get in there and the water sprays you. So… the hack is to be a parent,” she joked.

Anchor Tim James just carries an ice pack around with him.

“I like wearing cargo shorts and then taking ice cubes that’s protected so it doesn’t leak and put that in my pockets and try to cool down that way,” he explained, garnering odd stares from others in the newsroom.

Down the hall, our friends at JACK 96.9 had some more ideas, the first of which is to simply go nude.

“‘Tis the time to do it,” said Lena Shulman with the JACK morning show. “You don’t need those extra layers, especially in the comfort of your home. Cover your mirrors, if you must. But go nude.”

“I like to give my armpits a little spritz!” said “No Fun” Bobby. We think he means water, though a little deodorant never hurts anyone.

Actual experts have offered some tips to help you beat the heat. They recommend pushing outdoor activities to cooler times of the day, or even postponing strenuous activity for a different day altogether.

Make sure to slather on the sunscreen if you head out, wear a hat, and seek shade. You’re also reminded to check on your friends and family who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
