Science World invites you to take a backyard adventure in latest exhibition

Vancouver (NEWS 1130) – There is a world of science waiting for you in your backyard. That’s the idea behind Backyard Adventures, the newest feature exhibition at Science World opening Wednesday.

“It’s really about just recognizing the amazing, wonderful science that you have in your backyard and including that to mean in your community as well,” explains Science World President and CEO Tracy Redies.

Redies says a variety of COVID protocols will be in place to keep everyone safe.

“It’s a 5,000 square foot exhibit that’s in a 10,0000 square foot space. So, the exhibits themselves are very spread out,” she says. “We require a mask mandate for everyone over six and we have introduced vaccine cards for all adults.”

Redies admits it’s been a tough year for the attraction, given the pandemic.

“But we did see an uptick in attendance over the summer, still running at well below our capacity, only about 30 per cent. So, it’s probably going to take a few years for this to come back…especially with international tourism a bit limited.”

She describes some of what people can expect to explore.

“Visitors will get to dig in the dirt of an augmented reality garden bed, collect pollen from flowers, listen to the sounds of birds and frogs, play backyard-themed mini-golf and interact with the science that’s all around them. Exhibits such as ‘Plant vs Insect’, the ‘Bee’s Eye View’ and the ‘Nectar Collector’ enable visitors to discover details they normally don’t see and ask questions about how organisms live in different environments,” Redies writes in a statement.

“Visitors will learn to appreciate the biodiversity of their gardens in the ‘Food Web Pond’, use problem-solving skills in ‘Garden Golf’ and explore fun activities in the ‘Garden Shed’.

Backyard Adventures runs from Sept. 29 to Jan. 14. Indigenous people get in free this between Sept. 30 and Oct. 3, in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
