In the warning, the service says the heavy rain is due to an atmospheric river flowing off the Pacific Ocean. Snow is also to be expected for higher elevations above 2500 metres.
Drivers are being reminded to turn on headlights and maintain a safe following distance as visibility can be reduced.
Heavy downpours may also bring flash flooding and water pooling on roads, with the weather service asking folks to be careful near rivers, creeks, and culverts.
