Heavy rainfall expected for Lower Mainland through weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver, as almost 100 mm of rain is expected through the weekend.

According to the weather service, “A long episode of heavy rain is expected” for central and southwest Vancouver, the North Shore, Howe Sound and Sunshine Coast, Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge.

In the warning, the service says the heavy rain is due to an atmospheric river flowing off the Pacific Ocean. Snow is also to be expected for higher elevations above 2500 metres.

Drivers are being reminded to turn on headlights and maintain a safe following distance as visibility can be reduced.

Heavy downpours may also bring flash flooding and water pooling on roads, with the weather service asking folks to be careful near rivers, creeks, and culverts.
