History was made in the BCHL with the first ever all-female officiating crew to work a Canadian Junior A game.
On Sunday, Grace Barlow and Megan Howes served as referees, while Melissa Brunn and Colleen Geddes worked the lines at a BCHL match up between the Surrey Eagles and the Langley Rivermen.
It’s not the first time female officials have been on the ice, but it is still rare in hockey, and an entire crew is usually unheard of.
Barlow says she knows how big a deal this game was.

“It feels pretty great, I am not going to lie. It’s such an honour to be a part of history,” she told Sportsnet 650, adding, “it was really fun.”
Howes shared her excitement ahead of the game, saying she is proud of their journey.
“To share the ice with strong athletes is one thing, but to skate alongside strong female athletes at this level is another,” said Howes in an interview with the BCHL.
Brunn says it shows hard work pays off.

“This game is monumental for the game of hockey as four females take the ice. However, it is also about recognizing that drive and determination are not marked by gender. I hope we are able to make the BCHL, our peers and young female athletes proud,” she said to the BCHL.
Geddes says it is exciting and extra special because of their friendships on and off the ice.
