Moustache growers rejoice! Movember celebrates fan-tache-stic 15th anniversary

Monday is day one of Movember, the annual moustache-growing fundraiser for prostate cancer and men’s health, now celebrating its 15th year in Canada.

Organizer Mitch Hermansen says it’s hard to believe this is the second year the campaign has been held during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve definitely seen the impact of this pandemic on people’s mental health, and that continues to be a crisis point for men,” he said. “Three out of four suicides in Canada are by men, and research shows that isolation and lack of social connectedness can be factors that lead to mental health struggles, so we need to continue to be paying attention to the people in our lives.”

Started in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003, Movember came to Canada in 2007 in partnership with Prostate Cancer Canada. The movement has since expanded to over 22 countries, with more than 6.5 million “MoBros and Mo Sisters” participating in the annual hair-growing event.

New for 2021 is the Great Canadian Movember Challenge, a search for the best moustaches in all the land.

“We are looking for the best and brightest mustaches across Canada,” Hermansen said. “We’re going to be selecting 10 winners from across the country and Canadians are encouraged to get involved and submit their mustaches, and then we’re going to feature their face on billboards across the country on November 30.”

But he notes, it’s not just about the fuzzy thing on your face, but the meaning behind it.

“We’re looking for the great moustache, but also the story behind them. So we’re looking for people to get involved, and they’ll be able to submit their photo and their story on our Movember Canada Facebook page.”
