City of Victoria mandates COVID-19 vaccination for employees

Anyone who works for the City of Victoria will have to be fully vaccinated by early next year. The city is giving workers until Jan. 5 to be fully immunized with an approved COVID-19 vaccine.

It’s unclear what might happen to those workers who decide not to get immunized against the novel coronavirus, though the city does admit there are some “legitimate grounds for accommodation under the BC Human Rights Code.”

The proof of vaccination policy will apply to all employees, regardless of where they work.

“Vaccines are the strongest prevention measure we have against COVID-19,” City Manager Jocelyn Jenkyns said. “This vaccine requirement will continue to protect employees in all of our workplaces, as well as members of the public who we interact with.”

While the policy won’t apply to elected officials, the city says all members of Victoria Council are fully vaccinated.

Victoria follows the lead of neighbouring Saanich, as well as Vancouver and Kelowna, which have already announced their vaccine requirements for city staff.
