Men who used clothes, turbans to rescue Maple Ridge hikers honoured at Vancouver Canucks game

The Sikh men who made headlines around the world for a rescue at Golden Ears Provincial Park last month were recognized at Friday night’s Vancouver Canucks game for their efforts.

The honour came as the Canucks marked Diwali night, paying tribute to South Asian art and culture.

Gurpreet Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Arvindjeet Singh, Kulinder Singh, and Ajay Kumar — all international students — came across the two people who had fallen down a steep embankment and gotten stranded by Lower Falls on Thanksgiving Monday.

They used their clothes and turbans to make a rope to pull the pair out from the edge of Gold Creek.

Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue and RCMP eventually arrived on scene, helping to get the hikers out to safety.

Video of the rescue showed extremely high and fast running water below the group, with crews saying it would have been unlikely that anyone would have survived had they fallen in.

The five men were given the Community Leadership Award, a certificate, and tokens by the RCMP on Oct. 26 for their bravery.

The footage of their daring rescue has gone viral, with praise pouring in for the men and their efforts.

“So many people are saying, ‘Good thing you guys stopped. Not every person stops to try to help’ …. I’m feeling very happy, I can’t explain,” said Gurpreet Singh after receiving the RCMP honour.
