School closures continue in some parts of Fraser Valley

All schools in Chilliwack will be closed again Friday, due to the ongoing closure of Highway 1 — but the board says they expect a full reopening Monday.

“We received information today that highway one will remain closed for next week and perhaps longer, with Highway 7 via Agassiz open for emergency use only. We understand that some staff may not be able to reach their worksite due to road closures and evacuation alerts. Based on our analysis, we will continue with school closures in Chilliwack to all students and staff on Friday, Nov. 19,” says a Facebook post.

“The District Senior team is planning a full return to school on Monday, November 22, 2021, and will communicate information regarding return to school, including viable bus routes, to all families on Sunday, November 21, 2021.”

In Abbotsford, only three schools remain closed — Barrowtown Elementary, Matsqui Elementary, and Upper Sumas Elementary. Others will be offering either online learning or in-class instruction. A full list is available online.

The Fraser Cascade region, which includes Hope and Agassiz, called off all classes for the rest of the week. The board chair says in the wake of this disaster, the “teachable moment is to see what we can do for our local community, our wide-ranging district, and our province.”

The University of the Fraser Valley has called off all classes, activities, events and exams — both virtual and in-person until at least Friday.

“UFV campuses in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Mission are safe and buildings remain open to faculty, staff, and students with very limited in-person services,” a statement from the university says, adding the libraries will be open between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

“Food services will not be available.”
