Fraser Valley homeless shelters prepare for freezing cold weather warning

A special weather statement is in effect for cities in the Fraser Valley, as rain and snow is expected to hit the area, leaving people experiencing homelessness to survive in the extreme cold.

Neil Oslund with the Ruth and Naomi’s Mission Family Centre is preparing for the influx of guests over the next few days.

“Even if they are sitting up against the wall, at least they are dry and warm. We try and accommodate anybody that does come to our door during harsh weather,” says Oslund.

The maximum capacity at the centre is 60 people, however, during extreme weather, the shelter accommodates as many people as they can fit in the building.

“We try not to turn anybody away, especially during harsh weather. This morning I was driving and I saw somebody sleeping on the doorstep of a church that kind of breaks my heart.”

According to Environment Canada, the cold airmass will go from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.
