Snow set to return to Metro Vancouver to start off 2022

This week’s major snow storm brought accumulations many areas of Metro Vancouver were not expecting. Though we’ve gotten a bit of a break from the flurries, more are set to return as we enter the new year.

CityNews weather specialist Denise Andreacchi says light snow will begin Saturday morning, stretching into the afternoon.

“As temperatures climb, we start to see that mixed precipitation and then finally changing over to straight rain for Saturday night and through the day on Sunday,” she explained.

She says rain will be widespread, and there will also be some wind.

“The winds will be gusty — not overly gusty, we’re not expecting wind warnings to be in effect here, but it is going to be an unsettled wet and windy day on Sunday into Monday as well,” Andreacchi added.

Arctic outflow warnings are no longer in effect, with temperatures having warmed up quite a bit this week. However, Andreacchi notes we’re still in store for more cold temperatures.

She says this warm up is temporary.

“We’re still going to be tapping into some cold, blustery, arctic air, and we could still get into some snowfall next week.”

Most of next week’s snow, she adds, will be overnight and replaced by rain during the day.

The snow that fell Wednesday night into Thursday morning created major challenges on Lower Mainland roads. Many municipalities have said they were caught off guard by the amount of snow that fell in a short period of time.

Conditions on roadways were improved in many areas Friday morning, though there are still many parts that remain covered.

Black ice is also a concern as cooler temperatures remain.
