Ironworkers Bridge, Highway 1 reopen after old-growth forest protests

The Ironworkers Memorial Bridge and a portion of Highway 1 in West Vancouver have reopened after earlier protests Monday morning.

This is the second time in less than a week that the Save Old Growth group has disrupted traffic on the North Shore.

Protesters first took to the southbound lanes of the bridge just after 7:30 a.m., with others moving along to the westbound lanes of the Upper Levels highway near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal shortly after.

The protest along the Ironworkers immediately contributed to traffic delays during the morning rush. Backups were also heavy along the Upper Levels.

The blockades come just days after protesters took to the North Shore, rallying to bring an end to logging of old-growth forests in B.C., saying “this is our last resort.”

Initially, demonstrators had planned to disrupt traffic at the Trans-Canada Highway off ramps on Monday, Jan. 24. However, those plans were delayed to Wednesday morning.

At the time, the group said it planned to continue blocking traffic “multiple times per week,” adding “the frequency and scale of actions will escalate until all old growth logging is stopped.”

The only alternate route to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal is Marine Drive. Drivers can take the Lions Gate Bridge as an alternative to the Ironworkers.
