B.C. reports 44 COVID deaths over Family Day long weekend

Over B.C.’s Family Day long weekend, an average of 11 COVID-19 patients died per day.

Vancouver Coastal Health recorded 17 of the 44 deaths, while Fraser Health reported 11. There were seven deaths in Interior Health, while Northern Health saw four. The remaining five were in Island Health.

Hospitalization numbers continue to trend down, with 688 patients compared to 733 on Friday. They include 108 ICU patients, down from 113.

Since Friday, the province confirmed 2,103 new COVID cases, though the figures are provisional. Even so, the actual number of new cases is believed to be much higher, as there are testing restrictions in place due to demand.

On Thursday, capacity limits were lifted for most events and activities, though masks and proof of vaccination are often still required.

There are four new outbreaks at health-care facilities for a total of 31 across B.C.

On the vaccine front, the province says 90.5 per cent of British Columbians aged five and up have received at least one dose, while 85.9 per cent have received a second. Among eligible adults, 57 per cent have received a third.
