Vancouver opens more shelter spaces due to heavy rain

With heavy rain expected Monday, the City of Vancouver has opened up over 100 more spaces in shelters to keep people dry.

Between 50 and 80 millimetres of rain are expected across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Long periods of downpours are forecast through Monday and into the evening before easing Tuesday morning. Areas near the mountains will see the heaviest rainfall.

The Evelyne Saller Centre on Alexander Street has the most space, with 42 mats available to adults between 11 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. The last entry will be at 1 a.m. Food will be offered before visitors go to sleep and also in the morning.

Another 20 mats are available for adults only at the Langara YMCA on W 49th Ave between 8 p.m and 8 a.m. Food will be offered to people as they enter and again in the morning.

The Bud Osborn EWR on W Hastings Street has 20 beds to offer to adults between 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. A hot meal will be offered in the evening and a continental breakfast will be available in the morning. This location is wheelchair accessible and pets are allowed. Showers are available at this location.

Fifteen mats are available at the Tenth Church on W 10th Ave at Ontario St. for adults only between 9:30 p.m. and 9 a.m. Light refreshments and showers are available. This location is pet friendly, with some restrictions.

Cascades Church on Boundary Road will be open to adults between 9:30 p.m. and 9 a.m. There are 10 mats available and food will be offered upon intake and again in the morning.

Directions Youth Services Centre on Burrard Street has seven mats available to teens and adults up to 24 years of age. The shelter opens at 10 p.m. and people can stay until 7 a.m. Up to four pets will be allowed in.

Meteorologist Michael Kuss says the storm is set to bring long periods of downpours through Monday and into the evening. The system is expected to ease Tuesday morning.

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says on Tuesday, we will get a drier stretch, “not totally drying out but drier than [Monday].”

“We should see some sunny breaks through the day [Tuesday] with a warmer high near 12 degrees.”
