TransLink fares increasing across Metro Vancouver July 1

TransLink is raising fares for everyone who takes transit around Metro Vancouver, including buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus, West Coast Express, or HandyDART.

TransLink’s board of governors has approved an average 2.3 per cent increase. The amount varies by the type of fare purchased.

The fare hikes take effect July 1 and mean people who regularly commute between Surrey and Vancouver will pay about $50 more per year for their monthly passes.

The biggest rate increases are for people who use the West Coast Express (WCE), especially people who travel between Mission and Vancouver on a daily basis. Monthly five-zone passes on the commuter train are going up $8.05 to $358.70. That translates to nearly $100 more per year.

Anyone paying the lower concession fare on WCE will also pay 10 cents more for one and two-zone fares, and 15 cents more for three zones, which translate to the biggest percentage increases at 3.39 per cent and 3.95 per cent respectively.

TransLink cancelled a 4.6 per cent hike in 2020 and decreased last year’s increase because of the pandemic and resulting economic situation. The company argues this latest increase is below its planned rate of growth.

People aged 13 to 18 as well as seniors 65 and up are eligible for concession fares.

Kids 12 and under ride for free, however they must be with a fare-paying customer on SkyTrain, SeaBus, or West Coast Express. Children under 13 can also use HandyDART for free if they are registered as a customer or if they are accompanying a registered customer.
