Murder charge laid in killing of caretaker of Vancouver’s Tatlow Park

A murder charge has been laid against a man accused of killing the beloved caretaker of Vancouver’s Tatlow Park.

Justis Daniel, 77, was found dead at his Kitsilano home near W. 3rd Ave. and MacDonald St. at around 11 a.m. Dec. 10. Police believe he was killed the day before.

Brent Steven White, 51, was arrested on Saturday and has since been charged with second-degree murder. Vancouver police say White and Daniel knew each other.

“If I was to classify them, they’re casual acquaintances. They’re not friends,” said Insp. Dale Weidman, adding the accused lives in Kitsilano and has no criminal record.

He was arrested “without incident,” according to police, and remains in custody.

“This crime shocked the community and caused significant anxiety, in part because we could not immediately explain what happened or guarantee there was no on-going public safety risk,” said Weidman.

“He was well-known and beloved,” he said of the late caretaker.

Vancouver police have not shared how Daniel died.

In the days following the caretaker’s death, police shared surveillance photos of the victim in the hopes of generating tips.

At the time of Daniel’s killing, police did not have any suspects nor a known motive.

The senior was well-known in the Kitsilano community and police say he had no enemies.

Earlier this month, police shared security footage of a man seen walking near the park the day they believe Daniel was killed. On Mar. 2, the VPD said investigators believed the person could have information to help the investigation.

“We hope this arrest begins to restore a sense of safety that some had lost, and that more answers will soon be given through the court process,” Weidman said.
