Vancouver artist’s song hailed an ‘anthem’ by AOC

Editor’s note: The TikTok video below features a song with lyrics that include mild coarse language.

Vancouver musician K!MMORTAL’s song has reached the ears of one New York congresswoman.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a video to her Instagram stories last week, singing along to the song “Sad Femme Club,” in response to turbulent Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson.

“I went on her Instagram and then I saw her singing along to ‘Sad Femme Club,’ literally mouthing the rap,” K!MMORTAL told CityNews, adding they’re happy their song is resonating.

“AOC was witnessing this ridiculousness … and in her writing, she said that Sad Femme Club was her anthem when she was watching this all,” they said.

“It was a reminder that when I speak from my heart and speak honestly and speak out, especially about topics that are hard to talk about, they’re appreciated and they’re heard.”

K!MMORTAL agrees with Ocasio-Cortez’ “anthem” label.

“My lyricism comes from what I’m learning about anti-oppression, anti-racism, de-colonialism,” K!MMORTAL explained.

They add ‘Sad Femme Club’ is a reflection of that learning.
