Vancouver SkyTrain passengers bear sprayed

Some SkyTrain commuters suffered from difficulty breathing and swollen eyes, after a passenger deployed bear spray inside an Expo Line train Saturday.

The train was travelling between the Main Street-Science World and Commercial-Broadway stations when a fight broke out between a group of about eight kids, according to transit police. The scuffle led to one of the kids setting off bear spray inside the train.

“When the trained arrived at Commercial-Broadway Station, all of the youth jumped off the train and they were last seen running outside of the station. Our officers attended and located a few of the people who were involved in the incident. They’ve been identified and they are known to us,” said Cst. Amanda Steed, Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

Steed says the group of kids and bystanders in the compartment all got off at the Commercial-Broadway stop. She adds nobody was seriously hurt or taken to hospital, and the bear spray has been confiscated.

No charges are expected.

If this type of situation does ever arise while you’re in a confined transit space, Steed says to “call 911, try and get off the train as soon as possible to not allow the effects of the bear spray to affect you. Just get off the train and try and get fresh air.”
