Brown drinking water linked to Vancouver water main break

A water main break in Vancouver Wednesday night meant brown water was flowing through taps for some people near Broadway and Oak Street.

The City of Vancouver says a private water line failed near W. 10th Avenue and caused a “temporary large discharge of water through the pipe.”

Several people reported brown water coming out of their taps at around 10 p.m.

“The large volume of water stirred up sediment in the pipe system, a normal occurrence when excess volume makes it way through a water main. The sediment does not pose any health or safety risks,” the City said in its statement.

City workers shut off the pipe so repairs could be done. Water in a parkade at an apartment on W. 10th Avenue was reportedly about 2.5 feet deep.

The building will be without water until the issue is fixed and the water line is reactivated. The property owner is responsible for the repairs.
