People are rallying around the family of a 14-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a dump truck near her school in Burnaby last week.
An online fundraiser, which has raised thousands of dollars, says the teen had recently arrived from Afghanistan and that she leaves behind her parents and five siblings.
“She was known to be generous, kind, loving and the eldest of her siblings, helping her Mother with all that was required in the home while also keeping her dreams alive. She excelled in her studies and took care of her younger siblings, helping her parents when and where she could,” reads the message posted on the GoFundMe page.
The fundraiser’s goal is $30,000. At time of publication, nearly $25,000 had been raised.
The Grade 8 student was walking near Byrne Creek Community School on 16 Street and 11 Avenue at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday when she was hit by the dump truck. The RCMP says other teens tried to save her but the victim was pronounced dead on scene.

Ledingham McAllister & Marcon Construction, the company that owns the dump truck, says it has shared surveillance footage taken from nearby CCTV cameras with investigators. The company says the video shows a dog running out of its yard and startling the girl, who then ran onto the road.
Burnaby RCMP will only say there was a dog nearby.
“Police are aware that a dog had been nearby at the time of the collision. Investigators are still analyzing all statements and information, however, there is no indication the dog was behaving dangerously or had previously been the subject of any complaints to police,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with Burnaby RCMP.
Police also say while they understand the community is looking for answers, they urge people not to jump to conclusions.
Speed and impairment are not believed to have been factors in this crash. The RCMP is still investigating.
