Fewer than 1% have gotten their ICBC gas rebate direct deposit

We’re getting a clearer picture of just how slow the ICBC gas rebate rollout really is. The public insurer says it’s only issued nearly 24,000 direct deposits, as of Wednesday.

Overall, ICBC has to hand out about 3.5 million cheques to eligible British Columbians.

“Customers who have paid for their insurance with a credit card can expect to receive their rebate as a credit on their card between May and June. We have already started issuing credit card rebates and anticipate issuing nearly 575,000 credit card rebates in the coming weeks,” says ICBC in a statement to CityNews.

It adds everyone else who paid via debit, cash, cheque, or another payment plan will receive their rebate as a cheque in the mail starting in June and it hopes everyone has their money by the end of July.

Back in March, the premier promised everyone would have their roughly $110 rebate by May or June to offset the rising fuel prices which hit the $2 per litre for gasoline.

On Wednesday, fuel prices in Metro Vancouver are hovering near the $2.30/litre mark in several areas including Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Surrey.

The premier says the option of reducing the fuel tax was not an option due to several factors, including funding for public transit.
