Moth spraying underway in Burnaby, Coquitlam Thursday

A heads up for those in Burnaby and Coquitlam Thursday, as crews are spraying for moths and motorists and residents may see a low flying plane throughout the morning.

The plane is expected to be in the air over the Brentwood area until around 8:30 a.m. However, spraying is restricted in areas with public schools and can only be done until 7:45 a.m.

A ground spray will also be done in many spots, including United Boulevard, west of Colony Farm.

Aerial Lymantria moth treatments were done in Surrey and Langley earlier this month. Mission, and Chilliwack will be next with spraying expected on the 20th, and 21st, weather depending.

A second and third treatment will be done later in the month, and in mid-June.

However, those concerned about the impacts of the pesticide on humans can check out several resources provided by the B.C. government. The Centre of Disease Control has found no harm associated, including in children, however some may experience mild irritation.

Experts suggest those who are very cautious should stay indoors, and avoid walking on the grass for four hours post-spray.

The areas were chosen due to the rising number of Lymantria moths discovered in those parts of Southern B.C., and were picked to prevent the insect’s establishment.

Residents are also encouraged to help in eradicating the harmful pests from Metro Vancouver by inspecting outdoor plant waste for egg masses and ensuring all green waste goes in the green bin or paper bags.

For Surrey and Delta residents, there are also pickup and drop-off services available for residents who have large green waste items which do not fit in the bins.

Questions or comments about the program can call the Lymantria Moth 24-hour Information Line at 1-866-917-5999.
