BC Ferries cancels sailings again over staffing shortage

BC Ferries has cancelled a number of sailings Sunday between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen because of staffing issues.

The sailings are primarily affected in the afternoon and evening, however, alternate service is available at Horseshoe Bay and Duke Point in Nanaimo.

BC Ferries says they made the decision to cancel ferry sailings only after exhausting all other options.

This comes after numerous sailings were cancelled on Friday and then uncancelled along a busy route.

The vessel, which serves the popular Sunshine Coast route did not have the Transport Canada required a number of crew members in order to sail, which BC Ferries says was the reason behind the previous cancellations.

That has become a constant issue facing the company in recent months, blamed on the pandemic as well as a global mariner shortage.

On Friday, BC Ferries also issued three days’ notice that there wouldn’t be enough staff on Sunday, impacting four sailings on the route.

Alternately, passengers can try the Tsawwassen to Duke Point and Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay routes instead.
