Technical Safety BC stresses importance of permits, skilled workers in home renovations

With high-sky inflation in B.C., some locals are looking at saving money on renovations.

A recent survey by Technical Safety BC, which oversees installation and operation of technical systems and equipment in the province, found that just over a third of residents would consider doing renovations without a licensed contractor or permit, “even though they are aware of the risks associated with unpermitted work.”

But according to the organization, taking matters into your own hands may not always be the right decision.

“Licensed contractors know what is found within walls, pipes, and beams. They also have in-depth experience with the British Columbia Electrical and Gas codes and standards,” explained Mike Pilato, technical leader for Electrical, Technical Safety BC.

“Although it may be appealing to attempt a project on your own, before doing renovations or repairs, homeowners need to understand what permits are required, and if they must hire a licensed contractor to perform the regulated work under permit.”

The organization says nearly half of people surveyed weren’t aware that a permit is required for home repairs or renovations in B.C. Meanwhile, 35 per cent of survey respondents say they feel YouTube videos give you all the information you need to do such jobs safely.

Pilato is encouraging people who do home renovations involving gas or electrical work to hire a licensed professional. If you do choose to do the job yourself, he recommends reaching out to Technical Safety BC or your local government to get the required permits before you start.

Technical Safety BC notes that taking a DIY approach can actually cost you more in the long run or create more problems for you. Doing so can also pose a risk to those living in the home, it adds, if you don’t know what you are doing.

The group says not only does not hiring a licensed professional come with safety and cost risks, it can also affect your insurance claims should something go wrong.

Anyone looking to do upgrades or make repairs is urged to do the required research beforehand and to find out what official paperwork is required.
