Kitsilano Pool to re-open ahead of August long weekend

In good news for swimmers in Vancouver, the park board has confirmed Kitsilano Pool will re-open to the public before the upcoming August long weekend.

Suffering major damage in a storm surge this past January, the park board initially told residents the pool would remain closed for the entire summer as repairs were undertaken.

Giving an update last month, the park board walked back their initial assessment and said the city had a slated opening for July 30 — which has now been confirmed for the beachside pool.

Previously, the park board said the pool needed to be inspected to determine what repair work would be required. That could only be done if the pool was drained – something that couldn’t happen until a certain time because of tides and groundwater levels.

A preliminary inspection had unveiled major cracks in the deck floor, as well as other areas where deck panels had lifted. Chambers that are used to help fill the pool with water were also damaged, says Peter Fox, manager of Recreation Services.

Spots for swimming will be based on staffing levels, and updates about opening hours can be found on the parks and recreation website.
