Two dead after New Westminster traffic stop leads to crash

A serious crash in New Westminster overnight has left two people dead and two others arrested.

It happened at around 11 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 10th Street and 6th Avenue.

“A traffic stop was attempted and the suspect vehicle did flee,” said Const. Amanda Steed with Metro Vancouver Transit Police, which is in charge of the investigation.

The fleeing car was soon found in flames after crashing into a second car.

Police say two people in the second vehicle were taken to hospital, but died from their injuries.

“Both suspects remain in custody and charges of prohibited driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and flight from police are being recommended,” said a police statement.

Burnaby RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit has been called in to aid the investigation and Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been contacted.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has dash camera footage is asked to contact Metro Vancouver Transit Police at 604.515.8300.
