Metro Vancouver heat wave scorches on, YVR temperature record falls

There’s no relief in sight when it comes to the heat wave that’s blistering Metro Vancouver.

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says Wednesday wasn’t quite as hot and we did not see widespread records broken. But there was one of note:

“We got up to 30.4 degrees at YVR, breaking the old record of 29.9 set in 1998,” Kuss said.

He adds the heat wave will last a bit longer than originally anticipated.

“We still have to get through at least four more days where temperatures will be in the mid-30s away from the shoreline and even closer to the coast, the upper-20s,” he said.

The fire danger rating is in the high to extreme range across a large portion of B.C.

Sarah Henderson, scientific director in Environmental Health Services with the BC Centre for Disease Control, says hot weather can lead to confusion in the elderly, and they may need some help in beating the heat.

“You want to see whether they’re answering questions with clarity and confidence. ‘What address do you live at? What’s your phone number? What are the names of your children (if you have children)?’ Those kinds of simple questions, are they addressing those in a way that makes you feel confident that they’re doing okay?”

She adds changing locations in your home could make a big difference.

“Being in the coolest place in the home, sometimes that’s not the most comfortable place, in terms of its set up. But sometimes there are cooler rooms in a home, especially on a north side of the building or maybe on a lower floor.”
