Surrey care aide accused of fraud, theft from 96-year-old Richmond man

A Surrey woman who was hired to take care of an elderly man in Richmond is accused of stealing from him and using his debit and credit cards around town.

Ana Marie Lat Chamdal has been charged with several offenses. Police say the 30-year-old worked as an in-home care aide for a 96-year-old man in Richmond.

Last month, Mounties were told his wallet was stolen and his credit and debit cards were fraudulently used in Surrey and Delta.

Chamdal was arrested on Wednesday. She’s charged with fraud over $5,000, possession/use of a stolen credit card, two counts of using a forged document, identity theft, and personation with intent to gain advantage and breach of undertaking.

She was released from custody with conditions, including not working any jobs in homes or care aid facilities, or anywhere where seniors are cared for.

“It is disheartening to see an elderly person taken advantage of, especially by a person entrusted with providing care for them,” said Cpl. Vanessa Munn with Surrey RCMP. “This also serves as a reminder that is it important to monitor elderly family member’s finances to ensure that they are not being exploited.”

Mounties have shared a photo of the suspect, adding they believe she worked as a care aide in Richmond, Delta, White Rock, and Surrey.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP Financial Crime Unit at 604-599-0502.
