Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum launches re-election campaign

Surrey’s incumbent mayor, Doug McCallum, officially launched his re-election campaign Thursday.

McCallum, the head of the Safe Surrey Coalition, has been mayor for one term that has seen its fair share of controversy.

“I’m humbled a lot to appreciate the fact that the citizens of Surrey, four years ago, gave us a mandate. And along with the Safe Surrey Coalition, we delivered on that mandate,” McCallum said Thursday.

His campaign launch comes one day after he promised to build a 60,000-seat stadium in the city, should his bid for re-election be successful. The stadium would be the biggest in Canada, he said.

That promise was once highlighted at his election campaign launch.

“It will be a multi-purpose stadium where a number of sports can take part but also just not sports — we’ve had requests from our cultural community to have a big venue where they can put on some big cultural events,” McCallum explained, pointing to events like Vaisakhi celebrations.

“People love living in Surrey,” he said, adding the city continues to grow each day. “In the next four years we are going to do a number of things so that our city moves ahead very quickly.”

One such project includes the extension of SkyTrain service into Newton, work that has already been put in motion. McCallum is also vowing to put more work into building housing to address rising prices.

McCallum also took some time to outline changes his party has made since the last election, including the ongoing switch from the RCMP to a municipal police force.

The pledge came after Surrey First mayoral candidate Gordie Hogg promised on Tuesday an additional 300 police officers in the city, should he be elected.

Surrey-Newton MP Sukh Dhaliwal, Surrey-Panorama MLA Jinny Sims, and City Councillor Brenda Locke are also challenging McCallum for the mayor’s seat.

The civic election is set to be held on Saturday, Oct. 15.
