The last out of control wildfire burning in B.C. has been downgraded to being held.
The Battleship Mountain fire, near the small community of Hudson’s Hope in northern B.C., will no longer be listed as a wildfire of note.
Over the past 15 days the fire hasn’t experienced much growth, but it reached a span of more than 300 square kilometres.
The fire first started at the end of August, where the BC Wildfire Service says it was likely caused by lightning and then became out of control.
An evacuation notice was issued on Sept. 10 and lasted one week, impacting close to 1,000 residents.
“Nearby communities can still expect to see smoke within the fire’s perimeter over the coming weeks. This is common with large wildfires, and smoke will continue to be visible until there is significant rainfall at the site. Smoke appearing from well within the fire perimeter and burned material is common,” the BC Wildfire Service notes.
