Suspect who used small hammer to randomly attack stranger arrested: VPD

Vancouver Police says it has arrested a 27-year-old woman in connection to an unprovoked attack Sunday evening.

The attack happened around 6:15 p.m. when a 33-year-old woman was walking with friends on Seymour Street near Pender Street when she was struck from behind, according to police.

A small hammer was allegedly used by the suspect in the attack, who hit the victim over the head before people were able to intervene.

“The suspect did not know the victim and didn’t have any previous contact with the group,” says Constable Jason Doucette.

“This random attack could have been much worse if bystanders hadn’t of helped out by sheltering the victim and calling 9-1-1. The victim, obviously shaken, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Officers were able to arrest the suspect nearby and recover the weapon thanks to the assistance of witnesses.

Shaundrea Janette Lynxleg has been charged with assault with a weapon and remains in custody.

Vancouver Police are urging members of the public to call 911 if they witness a crime or have concerns for their safety or the safety of others.
