The BC Liberals are putting up a proposed name change to party members.
BC United is the new potential name selected for the party after a province-wide survey.
BC Liberal leader Kevin Falcon said party renewal was a priority once he took the top job, and a possible name change was part of that.
One branding expert thinks the potential new name signals the party is going for a more contemporary approach.
“It definitely doesn’t have that kind of grandiose that say, Liberals, does right now. They’re definitely going for a more modern path with this naming,” AJ Brown, senior strategist with StudioThink explained to CityNews.
Brown says even though the name is not a done deal yet, it is already being received in the marketing and branding community.
“The association with soccer and football, we have got a ton of football fans that follow their teams. They all jumped on it right away.”
Brown believes the party still needs to engage more with the court of public opinion though.
“When something like this is happening, get involved. Be a part of the community that’s having the conversation. Social media has been around, and it’s where people go to have these conversations, and if you’re not part of it, you’re missing out on the ability to make connections with your constituents and to grow the party.”

BC Liberals have flirted with a name change a few times in the past, aiming to distance themselves from the federal Liberals.
The proposed name will be decided in a vote from BC Liberal members by the end of the year, according to a statement.
In addition, the statement says all members will have an opportunity to vote on the name change.
